Herkimer diamonds are not diamonds at all but quartz. They took the name for their water-clear bodies and the bright facets of their crystal form. Most quartz points at one end only. These close to a point at both, and collectors prize them most when they are clearest, and more still when they stay seated in the stone that held them, as this one does.
Look closely and the crystal holds its own weather: fine veils and fractures within, a few dark flecks, and the color spectrum that wakes when light enters at the right angle. The black lining its pocket and the glitter of the rock around it are what it grew among. Keeping them together keeps the crystal where it was formed.
In crystal lore it is called a stone of attunement and of dreams, long said to bring clarity and to amplify the energy of whatever rests near it. Some keep one by the bed. Others leave it in its stone, a small clear light kept in the dark.
