Clear sky-blue turquoise in rounded islands, laid into a matrix of golden ochre and dark brown, touched with cream. The matrix runs as a broad seam down the left of center; the blue gathers along the right edge and the lower end, and shows again on the sides, running down through the body. A smooth, glassy polish over a moderate dome on a clean oval. The back is natural: saw-lined blue in porous brown host rock.
Persian turquoise, from Nishapur in northeastern Iran. Nishapur has been worked for more than two thousand years and is still mined today. Its turquoise has long been prized for its color and quality.
High-grade, natural and unbacked, cut from old-stock Nishapur rough that was recently found in storage and newly cabbed (Rudy Ridge). Ready for a silversmith to set.
Its size would sit well in a ring, or in a small pendant.
